“Then Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?” Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah’s eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance. Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter.” (Gen. 29: 15-18, NKJV)
God has created you the best in life and it is important that you never settle for less. Whatever comes your way wants to understand your perception of the situation and your ability to negotiate. Laban came out with a proclamation and a proposition that seems wrapped up in love and good intentions to the undiscerning.
“Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?”
One great discovery you need to have about life is that majority of people are too selfish to have intentions concerning you that is better than the good they have concerning themselves. Even when it seems to be very favorable to you, know that it is most likely exponentially favorable to them.
Do understand that I am not teaching you to have a suspicious mentality about people because there are still good people out there but be sensible in your daily leadings because life will always examine your ability to negotiate.
“… but I want you to be wise in what is good, and [a]simple concerning evil.” (Romans 16:19b, NKJV)
The prerequisite for determining the good in any one is not because they profess to be a Christian.
- A chicken is part of the bird family that belongs to the class Aves, phylum chordata and kingdom Animalia. The chicken and other birds have similarities in many respects but a high flier does not have a chicken mentality.
- A chicken is a pretender. It will pretend as if it can fly. It will even temporarily for a few seconds leave the ground as if to take off but it will eventually come down.
- A chicken is a noisemaker. It can raise up a storm. By the noise you think something great is happening not knowing it is just an attention seeker.
- A chicken is a bird of the ground this means that the vision is limited. It cannot see very far therefore it does not know how to sacrifice the now to get the future.
- A chicken wants it and it wants it now. If it cannot get it now, it believes the world is coming to an end.
- A guide to any chicken is food. It eats in the direction of food and sometimes eat everything in its path. Due to the fact that food guides the path of a chicken, it is easy to curtail and derail the destiny of a chicken.
There is a word in Greek called Nomos (written laws, from where we get norms or accepted practice) and there is another one called Ethos (unwritten laws). While it may be written that, “Thou shall not steal,” but it is unwritten that, “Thou must not jump from a skyscraper.”
What guides high fliers mostly are ethos from where you get ethics. High fliers are ethical. What you use to frame the glorious world that you desire are the things that are not seen…Hebrews 11:3
If people are always hurting you then you have a problem—you have not defined who you are. “All things may be lawful but I will not be brought under the power of any.” Sometimes you need to draw a line that you can no longer do this.
If you abuse me once it is your fault but if I the abused continue to regurgitate the abuse like a ruminant chewing its curd then it is my fault. There are certain things in life as a high flier that you need to let go off because they are weights that prevent flight.
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us,and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,” (Hebrews 12:1, NKJV)
Forgiveness does not mean I agree with you neither does it mean you were right. It just means that I have too much in front of me to allow what is behind me to keep me incarcerated and bound by you.
I will not even wait for you to ask for forgiveness…I will not put my life on hold while waiting for you to ask for forgiveness.
Jacob at a time saw the beauty and the splendour of Rachel and he was wowed based on this Laban cheated him. His life was mortgaged for 14 years. Another opportunity eventually presented himself and Jacob was able to tell Laban that I have shed a chicken mentality…I am no longer moved by what I see neither do I allow food to dictate my vision.
Jacob’s first deal was a bad one but after 14 years of fruitless labor, he had another chance and he took it wisely. Laban asked Jacob the same question he asked 14 years earlier not realizing that the dimension of perception of Jacob has changed.
Laban asked Jacob: “So he said, “What shall I give you?” (Gen. 30:31)
The first time, Jacob said he only wanted a wife but the second time around he said,
“And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flocks: Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and these shall be my wages. So my righteousness will answer for me in time to come, when the subject of my wages comes before you: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs, will be considered stolen, if it is with me.” (Gen. 30:31-33)
You must be willing to make impactful sacrifice for an impactful destiny. What people give to you never last but what you give to yourself. When you look at the response of Jacob critically you will see that it signified a paradigm shift.
“You shall not give me anything…” A giver is superior and is always on top. Here Jacob said, I strip you of your superiority…you will not give to me but you will do for me. People that do for you are mostly people that maybe hierarchically or in one way or the other they are junior to you.
By this statement, Jacob was saying I become your superior. Your language in any situation matters a lot
